My grandmother's brother was named John Thomas Pentony (1887-1968), but was called "Tom" - he married Margaret Kneuer and spent his whole life in NY. I know he had one son, Matthew James Thomas (1914-1993). It's a long shot, but very possible that he could have had another son born in 1917 (like your grandfather). Do you know your Thomas's wife's name? Or where your gfather was born?
