My grandfather was Albert Joseph Francois Pepe (later Pape). He was born near Besancon, France, in 1868 in the village of Genie, France, and immigrated to America in 1892. He settled near his uncle (Auguste, I think)at Besancon, Indiana, and married my grandmother there (Zoe Pettijean). My father was born there in 1897 and was christened in Saint Louis Catholic Church. I think our name was originally pronounced like "poppy." However, it was changed to "Pape" after they moved on to California in 1904.
