Can anyone out there fill in the blanks, or connect this family to the Samuel Pepper/Peppers family of Mississippi/South Carolina?
Elijah Peppers/Pepper/Piffer born about 1823-1825 in Mississippi. Married Louisa LNU who was born about 1829 in Mississippi. They were listed as Elijah and Louisa Piffer, living in Attala County,Mississippi in 1850 with sons Samuel (4) and William (1).
By 1860 they had moved to Ashley County, Arkansas, and were listed as Elijah and Louisa Pepper with children Samuel (13) Mary (11) and Melissa (2) (unknown where William was)
In 1870 they were living in Pulaski Co. Arkansas. Louisa was no longer listed as the wife. Samuel and Mary were not in the household. Elijah was listed and his wife was listed as Mary J. (38) born in Alabama. Melissa (Malissa) was listed, as was a Columbus (8) and a Jonathan Ellis Pepper (7 months) Daughter Mary lived next door with her newlywed husband, John J. Walthall. There was no sign of Samuel.
In 1880, Elijah and Mary J. were listed as husband and wife, with Lemuel Elijah (8), Zedekiah W. (6) Kajah M. and Charley A. both 3 months. I believe Kajah to be Cage Monroe Pepper, who later married a Dora LNU and a Bonnie LNU. Lemuel Elijah went to Texas and was listed as Peffer and Pepper, He was in Wheeler, Tx as Lem. E. Peppers and in Gray Co. Tx. Cage was in Mississippi Co. Ark, and ended up back in Mississippi at some point.
I am reasonably certain that Elijah is from the Samuel Pepper family of Yazoo Co. Miss. The family names are almost identical. Elijah, Samuel, William, Zedekiah and Christopher Columbus, Mary and John are recurring names in several of the branches.
Elijah is shown as being born in Mississippi with parents from South Carolina.
