Percivals in Oneida County from 1835

  of 827

My great-great-grandfather, Eugene Percival, was born in 1852 in the Hamlet of Empyville, in the Township of Florence. He was the son of Delos, born about 1822 in Deerfield, NY and Elizabeth, also born about 1822 in NY. Delos' children included:
Mary b.abt 1842
Bryant b.abt 1844
Emeline b.abt 1846
Duane b.abt 1848
Durant b.abt 1850
Eugene b. 1852, H/O Margaret Hennessey, both buried Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Canastota, NY
Amanda b.abt1857
William b.abt 1859 d 1906 buried Maple Hill Cemetery Taberg H/O Lettie Rosa b.abt 1865.

I believe Delos is quite possibly the son of Moses Percival, born 12/7/1795 Plainfield, CT, date & place of death unknown. I've arrived at this conclusion because of two key facts.

First, the well-researched James Percival family tree shows the following:
James Percival, born 2/14/1749 East Haddam, CT, and died 9/20/1807 Plainfield, CT, and his wife Eunice Curtis, date and place of birth and death unknown, had the following children:
Moses b. 12/7/1795 in Plainfield, CT, d. date & place unknown.
Darium b. 8/22/1801 Plainfiled, CT, d. date & place unknown.
Lucy b. 12/1/1806 Plainfield, CT, d. date & place unknown.
Cotton b. 8/24/1806 in Plainfield, CT, d. date & place unknown.
Ransford b. 11/6/1808 Plainfield, CT, d. date & place unknown; and,
Vesta b. 11/10/1810, Plainfield, CT, d. date & place unknown.

**Careful review of the above shows these two youngest children were concieved too long after James' death to really be his! Perhaps the stigma of these obviously illegitamate children spurred Eunice Percival to move her family away from Plainfield, CT, sometime after the second illegitamate child was born in 1810.

Second, according to the Deerfield census index for 1835, Moses Percival, Cotton Percival and E. Percival all headed households there at that time. Delos Percival was listed as living in the Township of Deerfield, NY, during the 1840 Census. He would have been about 18. Delos is also listed as the head of his household in the Township of Florence, NY, from 1850 to 1870.

Since the names Moses and Cotton Percival are quite unique; the established records of the Percivals of MA & CT show no known date or place of their death or their mother's; the 1835 census shows a sudden appearance of Moses, Cotton and E. Percival in Deerfield; and the 1840 census shows Delos Percival in Deerfield, I'm sure that Delos was the son of either Moses or Cotton. I lean toward Moses since he would have been 27, while Cotton would have been only 16, when Delos was born and there is no apparent mention of Darium in either the 1835 or 1840 records for Deerfield.

I would love to hear from any Percivals who are descendants of Delos, Moses or Cotton or anyone who can help me further research and confirm my conclusions. Below, I've added the known lineage from Moses and Cotton to when James Percival first arrived from England, according to the James Percival family tree.

James' father was Ebeneezer b. 5/30/1731 East Haddam, CT, d. date & place unknown. His mother was Lucy Knowlton b. 3/6/1733 East Haddam, CT, d. date & place unknown.

Ebeneezer's father was James b. 7/9/1704 Barnstable, MA, d. date & place unknown. His mother wasElizabeth Bacon b. date & place unknown, d. 11/18/1739 East Haddam, CT.

James' father was also James b. 1/18/1671 Sandwich, MA, d. 5/19/1728 East Haddam, CT. His mother was Abigail Robinson b. 3/20/1674 Sacconesset, MA, d. date & place unknown.

James' father was also James b. about 1630 England d. before 3/22/1691 Sandwich, MA. His mother was Mary Rainsford b. 6/1/1632 Boston, MA, d. 4/12/1694 Sandwich, MA.
