Now I have info that my ancestors wove an interestingly circuitous pattern of migration from Plainfield, CT to Madison County.
Sometime around 1870 my gggrandparents, Eugene & Margaret Percival moved their family, household goods, farm cattle and livestock 35 miles south from East Florence, across the frozen waters of Oneida Lake to the richer soils and less severe weather of the hamlet of Whitelaw, Lenox, Madison, NY. Eugene's descendants called Whitelaw home for five generations. I moved from there as a young man and ended up have been living in Morrisville for the past eight years.
About 1850 Eugene's parents, Delos and Elizabeth, had moved from Deerfield, Oneida, NY to East Florence, Florence, Oneida, NY.
About 1835, Moses (the man I believe was the father of Delos), his brother, Cotton & "E." (whom I believe was Eunice, the widow of James) moved about 25 miles north from Madison, NY, (where James died) to Deerfield, Oneida, NY.
About 1810, or a little after, Moses & Cotton's parents, James & Eunice, moved west from Plainfield, CT, to Madison, NY, where James died.
The funny thing here is that my family moved in a large circle from Madison to Deerfield, to Florence, to Whitelaw and back to Morrisville, Eaton, NY, which is the next Town west of Madison! It took almost 200 years to end up back in south central Madison County!
