I have noticed messages questioning the spelling variations of this surname. In/around the Parish of Prestbury, Cheshire (a few miles from Over, Cheshire) I have found various spellings;
Percival, Percifall, Percifull, Parcifull, Parcival, Parcivale, Percifale, (etc, etc!)

I'm not sure this helps you very much!

Early English Parish Register entries were, very often, dependant upon the 'sound' of a name, rather than the concise spelling of it - as the majority of the population couldn't read/write or spell (even their own names) especially in the 1600's-1800. Cheshire was very rural & agricultural - there was no need to read or write, nor could the general population afford any schooling.

It was quite usual for the person writing the entry in the register to record the name as it sounded (phoenetically) according to the local dialect and/or his own dialect! The Cheshire dialiect, or accent, is very strong. Words would also sound different between the various classes in society. The more uneducated the individual was - the stronger his local dialect.

My own interest in the name? I am researching the surname Pickford in Cheshire 1600> and it would seem we are related to the Percival/fall/full family in Prestbury. (I believe from the village of Adlington, Cheshire).
I would be pleased to know if any of you have any info on this Cheshire family, late 1600's-mid 1700's, as I have very little myself and am trying to firmly connect Pickford to Parcifull/Parcival (or other spelling!!) As I too, have had problems with the spelling!
