I am confident that a record exists which matches what you told me about Martha, especially her given and middle names and her state of birth as Tennessee.Seems they had servants in the home, or borders, and more than one child.
This family is found on the 1880 US Census in McDonald, Jasper County, Missouri.His given name is "Smith," family name Perkens, and he also has a son named "Smith Perkens."Don't ask how or why his parents chose that name.That is what is written on the census, anyway.Here they are, free, courtesy of www.familysearch.org:
