Dear Cynthia, Yes, there is a family legend that the first Permar came from France with Lafayette, but I haven't been able to prove it yet. Actually the Permar lineage that I have traces back to the 17th C. in France. I would like to know what your stepfather's name is. We may have him on our genealogy which is W PA and Steubenville, OH. We live in Washington County and have census records for a John Permar who was born on the East Shore in MD and later located in Washington Co. Being able to document the parents of this John is key to links to France. John married Mary Offut in 1796 in Brownsville, PA. Has your step-father heard of John? I would love to share more information with you. My husband has been working on this family tree since the 1960's, so we have a LOT of information.

Thanks for responding to gen-forum.
