"Clues" for Early Perrigo Family researchers NY/VT
Like most researchers for these families have run into many roadblocks and contradictions as to origins. Mr. Bishops "Perrigo Papers" have certainly been helpful but also confusing @ times. While I do not have many answers even for my own research (i.e. is Dr John Perrigos father Joseph Perrigo or James Perrigo?) I do have some material which I have come across that I am willing to share with anyone who is interested.FIRST: The listing for Frederick
Perrigo in Mr Bishops Papers says that he might possibly be the son of another David born to David Perrigo and Katherine Alsop. While I cannot verify Davids parents. Frederick himself in his Deposition for Rev war pension states: He last saw his discharge when visiting his fathers house in Hancock MA (Berkshire Co) in 1788. The only Perigo in Hancock on the 1790 census is a David Perigo and would certainly correspond to Mr Bishops reference to another David being his father, it would also indicate that his father David was in Pownal VT prior to retiring to Hancock, MA. which is just down the road. That same document shows that both Frederick and his wife Mary VanOrnum were born in Pownal VT. and married in Charlotte, VT. the document also lists their children. He also seved as a recruiter during the War of 1812 and died in Ellenburgh NY. I can provide copies of this file to anyone interested. Another David Perrigo thought to be the brother of Dr John was also in Pownal but he is the one listed as A drummer having served in the revolution with a Rufus Perrigo and Frederick.
His pension file is also available as well as one for Rufus
but Rufus's papers are not very informative as to family.
SECOND: While not earthshaking the migration route for the NY & VT families certainly comes into play and may help in determining who was located at a certain place in time, i.e. one Rufus Perrigo was listed as being born in Dover NY
a further check lists his birth in Dover Plains, Dutchess Co NY. which is right on present day Rte 22 which paralells
the NY, CT/MA/VT borders running North & south. Wether the familiy or Families origins were through CT or NJ is unknown, but possible for either location to access through Dutchess Co. Proceeding North on this rte it intersects with a rte 43 which branches East & West. A turn west a short distance takes one to Stephentown, NY which back then was Albany Co and today Rensselaer Co. If one is to turn right on that rte a short distance takes you to Hancock, MA
and continues north intersecting Rte 7 to Pownal VT.If one continues north on rte 22 it takes you through to Washington Co/Charlotte Co NY where it branches (22A) into Skenesboro/Whitehall NY and back into VT.If one continues on main Rte 22 it branches slightly NW and intersects Rte 4 which is also a North/South rte that when taken North proceed to Ticonderoga, and Lake Champlain while those proceeding south will find Ft.Edward and a rte back to Albany/Rensselaer County. I mention this mainly because their are so many similar given names for Perigo/Perrigos listed for the 1790 census and it may be helpful for those who attempting to trace their families.THIRD: my own line of interest Dr John Perrigo merges with our Hitchcock branch
when he married Almira Hitchcock of Kingsbury, NY and I have a file for that family that I can share that begins with his appearance there and in FT Edward, NY. FOURTH:I have excerpted from the history of ESSEX Co NY a few pages consisting of a oral History of the Ticonderoga area provided by a woman who traveled and settled there with her family as a young girl in 1797, it tells of her life and her marriage by a Squire Perego who was also a doctor (who we believe to be our Dr. John)this is also available to those interested.I hope that some of this information is helpful and makes it a bit easier for other researchers. I welcome any input and will assist wherever I can.
