Paré in Canada became Perry - Census changed
When our family came down from Canada Paré showed up on the 1860 Census as Perry. Was that how the census taker chose to spell it as the only way he knew?Did they change to assimilate? Most likely the former as these were not educated people. The older girls use the Paré name when they got married but all the rest changed to Perry.
This family had 14 Children. The Dit names were also used by relatives in Canada. Emilie Legros-dit-St-Pierre might be known as LeGros or St Pierre.French Catholic genealogy books are excellent, easy to use and in major libraries.
