Further to my former posting. It seems very convincing that Martha Lavina Persons is a grand daughter of the Reverend Cornelius Gray Persons and Mary Benjamin through one of his sons: Samuel James born February 1, 1793, who married Lucinda Dodge; Lewis born 1794 who apparently married a Smith; Daniel born about 1800 who married Fanny Stevens; or Asa born in 1804. It seems she is NOT a daughter of Hosea Ballou, for I have accounted for all the known daughters in that family. Silas Lorenzo Emerson's father, Silas Emerson, married secondly to Sarah "Sally" Persons, daughter of Cornelius and Mary Benjamin.
The most likely father is Lewis. Martha Lavina and her husband were in Bloomfield, Walworth, Wisconsin, when their daughter Sophia was born there on May 22, 1848. Lewis's son Ezra Persons lived there four years later. It seems logical that Martha Lavina and Ezra were sister and brother, or cousins.
