Here is the obituary for Alonzo. this was copied from a newspaper clipping we have in our family records:
OBITUARY Alonzo Persons, who died at Bennington Center, (New York) October 26th, aged nearly 87 years, was one of the oldest residents of the town. He was the youngest son of Uriah Persons, one of the earliest settlers of Sheldon, Wyoming county. The father of Alonzo Persons came from Wilkesbarre, PA., in 1806 and bought from Joseph Ellicott, agent at Batavia for the Holland Land Company, a section 640 acres of land. He built the first framed house in the town and kept the first tavern. He had a family of twelve sons and two daughters. Seven of the sons bought farms on the same street as their father, and five of the family settled in East Aurora, Erie county. One son died in 1819 aged 21 and two died at the age of 5, the other nine living until old age. The family were noted for honesty and uprightness of character and being people of energy and thrift. The whole region was then a dense forest and there is nothing now to remind us of those early days. The descendants of this family now live in thirteen different states. Many have occupied prominent places in business and positions of honor. Alonzo Persons was born in 1811 in the town of Sheldon. He was the last of the family of a generation that did so much to settle and develop Western New York. No one is living now that lived in Sheldon at that early date, and few if any are living in Wyoming county, who resided there then. Mr. Person(s) had always lived in the county having moved to Bennington about 48 years since. He had witnessed nearly all the improvements of a century. He always took a lively interest in politics but never wished an office. Although very feeble, he voted for President McKinley, and had cast his vote at every presidential election since he was 21. The younger people of these many years will remember him as a person of a kind heart and gentle disposition. He had many friends among the young as well as the old, all his life. ...
DIED Alonzo Persons Alonzo Persons, one of the oldest and most respected residents of Bennington, died, on Monday, October 25th, at six p.m. The funeral services will be held on Wednesday.
