Circa 1915 photo of Hilda Petersen & her mother & sisters, Elk Horn, IA
Posted by: Paul Peterson (ID *****2235) Date: January 06, 2011 at 19:05:33
  of 1100

I purchased the subject undated RPPC (Real Photo Postcard) (not postally used) of a middle-aged woman and three young women. It is identified on the back with a glued-on label (by the studio photographer?) reading:

"Hilda Peterson [sic?]
Elk Horn
24032 [negative number?]

I believe this is the Hilda B. Peterson who is listed with her family in the 1900 U.S. Census data for Clay Township, Shelby Co., IA; the 1915 Iowa State Census data, and the 1920 and 1930 U.S. Census data for Elk Horn, Shelby Co., IA. Hilda, born Jul 1893 in IA, was the daughter of a bookkeeper turned general store merchant Hans Petersen, born May 1852 in Denmark (immigrated 1883 or 1886), and Marie/Maria (maiden name unknown), born May 1860 in Denmark (immigrated 1883 or 1886). Hans and Marie/Maria were married in about 1889 and they had 5 children (all born in IA): Anna B. Petersen, born Mar 1891; Hilda B. Petersen, born Jul 1893; Agnes B. Petersen, born Sep 1895; Richard B. Petersen, born Apr 1899; and Ewald Peterson, born about 1903.

I believe the photo depicts Marie/Maria and her three daughters, Anna, Hilda, and Agnes. At the time of the 1920 and 1930 enumerations, Hilda and her brother Richard worked as store clerks (in their father's general store?). Agnes was employed as a public school teacher.
