Joseph and Mary Petras Chicago IL (1921-2009)
My father Joseph J. Petras was a son of Michael K. and Katerina (nee Holoska) Petras from Cerova-Leskova Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) and three of their children were born there. They emigrated here in 1920. His father was a coal miner, laborer and farmer and he served in the French Foreign Legion.
Joe, was the first one born in the US in Lansford Pennsylvania on Oct. 21st 1921 and his family also resided in Chicago, Cassopolis Michigan, and Mauston Wisconsin. His siblings were Cyprian, Margaret (Frank) Arient, John, Vincent, Anthony, and Ann (John) Syre,
Joseph J. married Mary A. (nee Wisemiller) on Oct. 8th 1943 in Chicago and had six children from which sprang 15 grandchildren. They also helped in raising their many grandchildren while their parents pursued employment and college etc. They resided in Chicago, Wisconsin, Cicero and River Grove Illinois.
Joe enjoyed playing cards, bowling, cross word puzzles, watching the Cubs, the Bears and horse racing. He was a silk screener by trade. He served in WWII in the 91ST Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. In his senior years he volunteered much of his time to the American Legion Post and the VFW and served as Commander in each. He was employed part-time and still driving and active in the community even in his eighties.
