"Li Shih-ch'i was shot to death on September 21, 1920, by James (Pot) Petticrew, a member of the crew of the U.S. transport Merritt, at Chinwangtao. The matter was brought to the Department [of State]'s attention on December 28, 1920, and the matter was settled by the payment of $1000 U.S. currency to the widow of the deceased in September 1923."
