My ancesters come from the South East of England. You will find that there are several spellings of Pettyfur Pettifer,Pettifor,Pettifore,Pettiford,Puttifor Puttiphur. The name derives from a nickname given to an old roman foot soldier or a one footed roman soldier,it means iron foot,It is also found in France again from the Romans and the Germans have an equivalent known as Stelfot. If I was you I would carry on looking with an open mind to the spelling you will probably find it will change.I hope this has been helpful
