Hi Ian,
My name is Stephen Frank Pettitt, descendant of William Henry George Pettitt, the person described in your message, who arrived in Sydney in 1858.
By Chance my wife found this web site and your posted message whilst showing my father Jack Kevin Pettitt how to do searches on his computer, (he is 73 years old and still learning).
William Henry resided in Riverstone in NSW, rural at that time and worked as a carpenter; he married twice and had many children. His first wife died between 1885 and 1888, he had 5 children, Charles, William, Alfred, Lillian, Mabel.
Mabel died at the age of 32.
In 1889 William Henry remarried, to Mary A?
Not quiet sure what happened, but Charles, William, Alfred were sent to New Zealand (They were difficult to manage and the new wife didn’t like them, so the story goes). William Henry and Mary A had several Children, my Grandfather, Stephen – Henry – George Pettitt was one.
William Henry died of heart failure on September 9, 1905 and was buried on the 11th. He is buried in St Paul’s Church of England grounds, Windsor. (According to old records) however a tombstone cannot be found for William Henry, only for his wife Mary.
I have copies of some of these records which are available from the Windsor City Council Library. I have a pen sketched picture of William Henry available which I can send you a copy for your interest.
I have an Aunt who has more records which I can access if you require further information. I will contact her tonight and let her know of the details you have as she may be interested to trace the ancestry back to the UK, as from this end there were few records and until now little is know about William Henry’s parents and ancestors.
I hope this helps,
Stephen
