Pettus - Giles Co.TN / Limestone Co., AL

Hi,

I'm looking for information on a Pettus family that lived in Giles County, TN in 1850. Here's a link to the transcribed census:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~tngiles/census/1850/d1-455.htm

I believe the Elizabeth, wife of David Pettus, married my ggg grandfather David Gilbert in the early 1850s. The census information here matches his wife's information in the 1860 census, and would confirm some written, but unsourced, information in Limestone history books that say he married Elizabeth Pettus.

What's strange though is that none of her younger children are with them in 1860. Does anyone know what happened to them, or even what happened to her husband? Did they divorce and he took the kids? Did he and the younger children die? Did he die, and the kids went to someone else?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Jane
