This man was born about 1844 to 1849 in Baltimore, worked on the Ohio River steamers, was married in Alton, IL in 1867, had four children. His father's name was Samuel Pettus (or it may have been spelled Pettis), and he, too, was said to have been a Baltimore person. The father had a blacksmith shop in Baltimore.
Does anyone have any information about the Pettus Family in Baltimore?
