Linda:

>>You listed David Walker Pettus III, born 12/17/1805, son of 1780 David Pettus, Jr, married Sarah
Coats in this message. Could you give me more info on him?<<

Response: David Walker Pettus, III (as per Pocahontas Stacy, "The Pettus Family" on page 42) was b. 12/17/1806; d. 1880-1882, called "Walker."

Sarah Coats was b. 9/22/1806. I surmise that Sarah was brother of Daniel P. Coats (page 45), whose daughter, Permelia Ann Coats, (11/6/1828) married the son of Susan Gude Pettus (b. 8/4/1804). There were several Coats marrying into the Pettus family.

"He and wife Sarah sold to Thomas Pettus in 1846 and went to Texas." (page 42). However, he must have turned around and ended up in White Co., AR, as Mrs. Stacy states he was in White Co in 1852.

David Walker Pettus III was s/o David Pettus Jr (b. 12/2 or 20/1780) and Elizabeth Boswell (b. 11/28/1784 VA; d. 1838 VA; m. 12/24/1802 (bond)). She was d/o John Boswell and Mary Coleman. David Jr. was s/o David Walker Sr., b. 7/3/1755, who was s/o Thomas Pettus, the Burgess.

David III' s siblings were: John J. (1803), William Boswell (1805), Clauverous (1810), Thomas Coleman (1816), Joseph Cluverius (1820), Richard Elliott (1809), John O., Mary A. Colgate (1814), Martha Jane (1818), Elizabeth Susan (1822).

David III and Sarah had these children: William Thomas (9/17/1831), Elizabeth Jane (12/8/1832),Mary Frances (10/30/1838), Sarah Ann Virginia (3/14/1841), Martha Phesming (1/13/1846), John Jouett (10/7/1834, Demarcus Coats (10/13/1843) and James David Pettus (2/16/1848). William Thomas Pettus (1831) may have stayed in Alabama in 1846 and may have married a cousin, Mary L. Pettus, then went to Memphis TN.

Beware that there is also another David Walker Pettus of the near same age; however, he was born 1807 the son of Dr. Thomas Pettus (b. 7/27/1816 Lunenburg Co., VA; d. 7/9/189 Pettusville, AL), and this David went from Halifax to Madison Co., AL, the same place his uncle, David Walker Pettus III was residing. A brother Thomas also went with him. They are sometimes confused.

>>I have a D.W. Pettus, age 63, farmer, born in VA; wife Sarah, age 63, born in VA on the 1870
White Co. AR Census.<<

Response: This must be the same David Walker Pettus III and Sarah Morgan Pettus. Mrs. Stacy does not give the place or dates of death on these two.

>>Two houses down is C.J. Hart with a ? mark (should be Vincient Hart) age 32, farmer, born in VA; wife Sarah, age 32, born in AL; Martha, age 10, born in AR; Jefferson D., age 8, born in AR; Sarah L., age 6, born in AR; Mary E., age 4, born in AR; Harriet, age 2, born in AR; H. McNare, age 23, laborer on farm, born in MS.<<

Response: There were a lot of Harts mentioned in Mrs. Stacy's booklet, but none with C. J. given name or similar initials. Sarah Ann Virginia Pettus (d/o David III) married Vince Hart and they had William Hart (only son listed) with note: "Res: Searcy, Ark. in 1942."

>>Next house is J.D. Pettus, age 22, farmer, born in TN; wife Sarah W., age 19, born in TN; Nancy J. age 2, born in AR; David D., age 1 month, born in AR.<<

Response: J.D. is James David Pettus b. 2/16/1848 and wife, Sarah W. Morgan, b. ??, m. 7/28/1867.

Their listed children: Nancy Jane (5/30/1868), David Demarcus (8/6/1870), Rev. William Walker (1872), John Alexander (12/13/1876), Sarah (6/16/1875), James H. (1879), Olivia (3/27/1881), Daniel Walker (1883), Roy R. (1885), and William W. (7/8/1892).

Mrs. Stacy has listed some of the children of the above named children of J.D..

>>The Martha Hart, age 10, daughter of Vincent Hart and Sarah Pettus is my husband's great
grandmother. She married David Alphonso Skillern and moved to Indian Territory to an area now
known as Milburn, Johnston Co. OK.<<

Response: Other than Sarah Ann, Vincent and one child, William, Mrs. Stacy has none of this family listed. I could not find the Harts listed in James Strode Elston's work either.

>>I would love to find something on the ancestral family of Sarah Pettus. I am assuming that D.W. and Sarah Pettus are probably her parents and that J.D. Pettus is probably her brother.
Kaye<<

Response: The 1870 census age 32 for Sarah is close to 3/14/1841 (29 would be correct); however, Mrs. Stacy concludes that Sarah Ann Pettus married a Vince Hart makes this fairly definite. Could William had been born after 1870?

Thomas Pettus, the Burgess of Lunenburg (1712-1780) and Amey Walker (11/10/1735) had John Pettus (m. Susanna Winston), Thomas Pettus of Mecklenburg, David Walker (Sr. or I), Rebecca, Anne and Mary Pettus.

Thomas, the Burgess, was s/o John, s/o John and s/o Thomas Pettyous. It appears you tie into this illustrious and influential clan. Pettus was Gov. of Texas and of Alabama, and many fought for the formation of the Republic of Texas, including John Freeman Pettus at Battle of San Jacinto.
