Don, thanks for your reply. Apparently, I misunderstood your query, but now I understand that you think that John Pettus of Louisa Co., Virginia, d. 1770, may have had a daughter Mary by his first marriage to Mary Minor and that daughter Mary married John Clayton. I really can't comment on that possibility until I find more evidence that might confirm the possibility. I did look at the familysearch.org entry for John Pettus and Mary Minor and found the marriage date, just as you said. I would like to contact the submitters to see where they found the date, but I recall that one of them had moved the last time I tried to contact him (about 10 years ago). I'll try the other submitter. Maybe the address is still current.
