Mr. Pettus:

Please excuse my barging into this thread, but you appear to be the best authority to answer my question, although it probably warrants a new thread.

I am not a Pettus descendant, but have cousins who are. I am a descendant of the Taliaferro family of Virginia and recently found mention that Taliaferro descendants include Thomas F. Pettus of Alabama and Governor John J. Pettus of Mississippi. In the attempt to learn how these men had a Tailaferro line (I have been unable to find it), I discovered that the Pettus line of my cousins is not as I had understood it to be. I am therefore raising the question as to what the line is from Colonel Thomas Pettus the immigrant to Mary Pettus who married Thomas Brown and had Rebecca Brown who married William Wilson, Jr., of VA and GA.

I have two lineages for this family and both of them are wrong. They are (1): Colonel Thomas Pettus>Thomas Pettus II "married Miss Dabney">Dabney Pettus married Anne Overton<John Pettus married Mary Minor>Mary Pettus married Thomas Brown. (2) Colonel Thomas Pettus>John Pettus married Mary Minor>Colonel William Pettus>Colonel Thomas Pettus married Amy Walker>Mary Pettus married Thomas Brown.

Based on your GenForum postings, I deduce this line: Colonel Thomas Pettus married the widow Elizabeth Durrent>Mr. Thomas Pettus married (1) unknown and (2) Mourning, who later married James Bray, Jr.>Stephen Pettus married Mary Dabney>Dabney Pettus married Elizabeth Rhodes> John Pettus married probably (1) Mary Minor and probably (2) Mary Waters. Is this last John Pettus the father of Mary Pettus who married Thomas Brown? Or is this not the correct line for Mary who married Thomas Brown?

And if you happen to know the answer, how are Thomas F. Pettus and Gov. John J. Pettus descended from the Virginia Taliaferros? I see a Grymes in what I take to be their line, but the Virginia Grymeses are collateral to the Taliaferros by the marriage of the matriarch Katherine (Unknown) to (1) William Debnam (their daughter Catherine Debnam married the first Robert Taliaferro and was the mother of all the Virginia Taliaferros of this set), and Katherine Unknown married (2) the Reverend Charles Grymes, by whom she became the mother of all the Virginia Grymeses of this set. If my cousins who are Pettuses are also Taliaferros, we all wanted to know about it.

Thank you for any help you might be able to give in this dilemma.

Joseph Moore
