Seeking information on family of JOHN O. PETTUS and wife ELIZABETH HARRISON GILLIAM.
Per the 1830 census, Charlotte Co., VA, there was a John O. Pettus, age 30-39, placing his birth between 1791-1800. Also in this household were 2 females, ages 0-4, born bet. 1826-1830; and 1 female, age 20-29, born bet. 1801-1810. Presumably the older female was wife Elizabeth.
I believe the 2 daus., b. bet. 1826-1830 may have been daus. Martha, who was age 22 in 1850, and Barbara A., age 21, in 1850.
The 1840 Charlotte Co., VA census notes the following:
1 male - age 40-49 (presumably John O. Pettus)
3 females - ages 0-4 (b. 1836-1840)- daus. Sally E. and Mary W.--Sally b. abt 1836; Mary b. abt 1835, other?
1 female - age 5-9 (b. 1831-1835) - dau. Barbara A. ?
1 female - age 10-14 (b. 1826-1830) - dau. Martha?
1 female - age 30-39 (Elizabeth)
The 1850 Charlotte Co., VA census notes the following:
Elizabeth Pettus, age 45, b. Charlotte Co., VA
Martha - age 22, b. Charlotte Co.
Barbara A. - age 21, b. Charlotte Co.
Sally E. - age 14, b. 1836, b. Charlotte Co.
Mary W. - age 15, b. 1835, Charlotte Co.
Presumably husband John O. Pettus was deceased. I have not had an opportunity to seek a probate record for him.
I did find on an internet site the marriage record of a "Barbara A. Pettus to Allen T. Pettus, Charlotte Co., VA, on Sept. 23, 1850." Could she have been Elizabeth's and John's dau.? Possibly marrying a cousin?
Other researchers' information note that Elizabeth died in 1858. Since John did not appear on the 1850 census, it is presumed that he was deceased. Searches of the 1860 census have not found John nor Elizabeth.
Elizabeth's parents were Martha Cox Barnes and Allen Gilliam. I have been attempting to research these Gilliam collateral lines. I do not have much on the Pettus lineages, except as they married Gilliams.
