Pettus Family Genealogy Forum

I was born and raised in Richmond but now live in Fairfax, Virginia. John's older brother, Walker Pettus, was my great-great-grandfather. In Virginia, probate and estate records were recorded in bound volumes that included wills, inventories, sales accounts, and the like instead of accumulated in probate packets as with some other states. I don't recall seeing any records relating to the settlement of John's estate, but that may be due to the fact that I was not looking for them when I visited the courthouse. John is mentioned in the real estate tax records from 1829 to 1849. In 1850, his estate was taxed. John also paid personal property tax from 1823 to 1849. I have a letter written by John's niece that mentions his children by name. My book does not carry down the lines of descent from the Pettus females except for the names of their children. I may contact you with regards to some questions about the Gilliam family.
