So far as I am aware, no evidence exists that Dabney Pettus married Ann Overton or that she was the daughter of Samuel Overton and Miss Carr. The only early Dabney Pettus of record married Mary [?], daughter of Capt. George Dabney of King William County, Virginia (see his will). Also, I know of no evidence indicating that Ann Overton was the daughter of Samuel Overton. They seem to have been in the same generation!

Most of these ideas stem from the childhood memories of Ann Pettus Eastham of Louisa County, Virginia. She was born in the early nineteenth century and had heard stories as a child about early Pettuses. Many family historians have used her recollections as their source for the early generations of Pettuses in Virginia. Regrettably, some of Eastham's memories are inconsistent with available records.
