Thanks very much for your most informative message, which I have used to revise and expand my capsule biography of Elizabeth Pettus. It seems to me that you are a careful genealogist. With regards to your question on how to proceed, have you been to the clerk's office in Charlotte, Virginia? I knew that Elizabeth had married a Gates from her father's will, which is recorded there (Charlotte County Will Book 1 (1765–1791), Part 2: 407a, 408). Her mother's will is recorded in Halifax County, Virginia (Halifax County Will Book 6: 43-43). The Fluvanna County record books are available at the clerk's office in Palmyra or on microfilm at the Library of Virginia in Richmond. I have visited these places many times to do research, but I am now trying to get my book on the Pettus family ready for publication later this year.
