Mr. Pettus,

I have read before that you were preparing a genealogy of the Pettus family. I descend from the Pettuses very remotely, through Ann Pettus who married Joseph Eggleston, but I am still very interested in purchasing anything you compile, especially since I grew up and went to college in the Peninsula area where the Pettuses settled and have been interested in following the excavation of the Thomas Pettus plantation in Kingsmill.

I already have photocopies of several articles on the Pettuses by Mrs. Pocahontas Stacy and others, as well as a photocopy of Henry M. Pettus' 1966 book on the Pettuses of Mecklenburg. Recently I happened to be in South Hill, VA and drove through its exclusive subdivision, Pettus Towne. Since Henry Pettus was a pharmacist in South Hill and retired to the outskirts of town, I'm curious as to whether this subdivision was named for him and is on his land. He died in 1979.

Also, my maternal grandmother, who was descended from the Pettuses and Egglestons, was born and raised outside of Keysville, VA. The Overton Pettus family has been quite prominent there, and several of them have detailed genealogy information on their gravestones in the Ash Camp Baptist Church cemetery there, where my grandmother's father is buried. I can send you information on those graves if you wish. One of them, George Overton Pettus, Jr., passed away recently, and his family were neighbors of my grandmother's half-sister's family in Keysville, the Tuggles.

You probably already have extensive information on the many descendants of Ann Pettus and Joseph Eggleston, but I can supply more if you wish to include them in your book.

Bryan Godfrey, Richmond, VA
