Pettus Book Status

Having checked to make sure that all the lineages following the name of the subject of each biography are correct, and having made sure that the pages are all numbered correctly, I began working on the index in September. About ten days ago, I took advantage of the clear, mile weather in Virginia to go on a photographic tour of Pettus sites from Hanover County down to Charlotte County. The Hanover County sites included Slash Church, Fork Church, and Hanover Courthouse. Two Pettuses, John and Stephen, settled in the vicinity of Fork Church in the early 18th C. The Charlotte County sites included the Staunton River Railroad Bridge Battlefield Park (Civil War), Avondale (former home of John Pettus, d. 1799), and Waverly (former home of Capt. Thomas Pettus, d. 1850). My guide for the Hanover tour was a distant cousin who helped me locate where the home of John Pettus, father of Thomas Pettus, burgess of Lunenburg County before the Revolution, stood until it was moved recently. This was an exciting discovery, as the exact location had previously been unknown to me. Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain permission to enter the property where the house is now located. The house is one of the oldest in Hanover County. The newly acquired information that led me to the property is important enough for me to revise two chapters in my book. Whether this will affect the page count and the index remains to be seen.
