In early June, the Family History Writers’ Group to which I belong reviewed my short paper on the Pettus family of England. The review went well, and I received some helpful comments that I used to revise the paper. I sent the revised edition to the editor of The Norfolk Standard, where it will appear in the September issue. This article covers over one hundred Pettuses in England, including some not mentioned in previous publications.
Also in June, I printed out the entire first volume of my book---around 800 pages. This volume spans twelve generations of Pettuses in England and Virginia. It also covers Pettuses who migrated from Virginia to other colonies and territories and their children. I also printed chapters 13 and 14 in volume 2, but I haven’t yet printed chapter 15, which covers my parents’ generation, until I find a picture that is somewhere in my slide collection.
Presently, I am revisiting and editing chapter 36, which reviews the evidence concerning the ancestry of Col. William Pettus of Louisa County and Spotsylvania County in Virginia. His ancestry was the subject of a sharp disagreement between pioneering genealogists. One theory identifies William’s father as William Pettis of Caroline County, Virginia, and his grandfather as John Pettus of King and Queen County, Virginia. This theory has been subject to the criticism that William Pettis and John Pettus were not true Pettuses but rather were members of a distinct Pettis family. According to another theory, Col. William was the son of a previously overlooked and unknown Pettus who was the son of John Pettis of Blisland Parish, New Kent County. Both theories are based upon rather flimsy evidence and both could be wrong; however, new evidence has come to light that bears upon the problem. Stay tuned. Perhaps the two theories are equivalent.
I am in no hurry to do the index until I am absolutely sure that the text is final.
