Pettus Family Genealogy Forum
When I began research for a biography of Col. Thomas Pettus forty years ago this month, little did I realize I would eventually wind up writing a book on the Pettus family of England and Virginia and would still be working on it today! Several times during the past decade, I had thought that I was nearly done only to have some previously unreported information come to my attention that was too important to ignore. So, I have had to revise my book occasionally to reflect the new findings.
Now that I am working on the index, I have adopted the policy that, once a chapter has been indexed, I will no longer change it (unless I find a major error). I am now working on the index to the eighth chapter, which, with the index to the introduction, covers over 25% of the text. I began work on the index back in October, so, at the present rate, I should be finished with the index by October of this year.
The Norfolk Record Society is still making arrangements to publish my article on the Pettuses of England. This article is based upon the research I did for the English Pettuses in my book. The article covers over one hundred known Pettus descendants in England of Thomas Petyous of Norwich who was granted the freedom of the city of Norwich in 1492. My book not only includes these English Pettuses in far greater detail but also extends the scope to Pettuses in Virginia and elsewhere who appear to be descendants of Thomas Petyous.
