This 1704/1705 Rent Roll list for VA shows a Thomas Brown in Essex Co., VA, as well as a John Pettus in Essex Co., VA....but John's entry shows that he was "of King and Queen Co., VA." I would not be too surprised if this Thomas Brown was an ancestor of the Thomas Brown who married Mary Pettus and who lived in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA (there are several clues that suggest that the Thomas Brown in Lunenburg was out of a Thomas Brown in Essex Co., VA). I would also not be too surprised if this John Pettus was the ancestor of the referenced Mary Pettus.

We really need a living male Brown who "traces back" to Thomas Brown and Mary Pettus to take the DNA test, via the Brown Genealogy Society DNA testing project.
