Please bear in mind that King and Queen County records sometimes refer to Pettits born in Essex County as "Pettus." I remember seeing one document in the Essex Courthouse in which a certain Pettit was also described as Pettis and Pettus. So the name Pettus in those counties may refer to a member of the Pettit family.
