During March, work continued on indexing volume II. I have now accomplished the following tasks:
1) assembled the complete index for text and endnotes,
2) checked page numbers (first cut)
I am now eliminating redundant index entries and developing rules for sequencing entries properly, keeping in mind that many individuals (particularly Pettuses) have the same given name(s). Those cases require the use of qualifiers to distinguish one individual from another. Generation indexes help, but, in some cases, further qualifiers are required, such as place of residence, birth year, etc. I am finding that the rules for alphabetization built into my word-processing software are not always compatible with standard rules used in genealogy. I hope to finish the index, print the entire book, put it into a three-ring binder, and perform one more check of the index before sending the book to the publisher this month or the next.
