Your message to the Pettus forum is fascinating in that it blends well-known historical facts with the Mattaponi oral tradition. The latter should be taken seriously, although sometimes oral traditions can sometimes be embellished or distorted with the passage of time and generations. You mention Thomas and Theodore Pettus as possible candidates for the husband of Ka-Okee's daughter Christian Pettus. These two Pettuses were indeed related to Rolfe Pettus of Essex County, son of William Pettus (b. 1554) and his wife Elizabeth Rolfe of Essex County, England. Theodore Pettus (b. 1600) arrived at Jamestown in 1623. Except for a deposition he gave to the General Court at Jamestown in 1626, he is not mentioned again in English or Virginia records. His elder brother Thomas (b. 1598) arrived in the colony sometime in the 1630s. Both were sons of Thomas Pettus, mayor of Norwich, England, in 1614. Thomas, mayor, was an elder brother of William Pettus, mentioned above. Thomas Pettus, Virginia settler and member of the Virginia Council of State, married Elizabeth Durrent, widow of Richard Durrent, according to a Virginia land patent. No record indicates that Thomas had married previously in England or Virginia. At the moment, I can't think of another Pettus who might have married Ka-Okee, but I will give the matter some further thought as time permits.
