Pettus Family Genealogy Forum
In October, I finished a near-final round of checking the index to vol. II of my Pettus book. I then turned my attention back to the subject of Pocahontas’s connection to the Pettus family (see listings on this forum and other sites on the Internet). Specifically, members of the Patawomeck and the Mattaponi tribes maintain that Pocahontas had originally been married to Kocoum and had a daughter named Ka-Okee. Ka-Okee, according to tribal tradition, married a Pettus, but no one knew for sure which Pettus. To help me get started, I began a series of fruitful e-mail exchanges with William “Night Owl” Deyo, historian for the Patawomeck tribe. The information from these exchanges, combined with my own understanding of the Pettus family, has recently led me to identify Ka-Okee’s Pettus husband. I have now finished summarizing the relevant information and the analysis that led me to my conclusion in a new appendix to vol. II. Bill Deyo is now reviewing this appendix to make sure all is correct, but his initial reaction was that I had at last solved the mystery. When he completes his review and I have satisfied myself with regards to certain specific points, I will post my conclusion on this forum. In the meantime, I have just finished indexing the new appendix and integrating the associated index terms into the overall appendix.
One more thing. I spent a year and over a month making extensive corrections to the index to vol. II. While compiling the index to the new appendix, I discovered what I had done wrong before. Before actually generating the index automatically, one has to change from a view that reveals the index codes to a normal view by clicking the paragraph symbol displayed in the “Home” tab; otherwise, the displayed codes push the text down the page and eventually generate new pages that will appear in the index. I wish I had been aware of that step before. I didn’t find it in my manual for Word users.
