I can trace my lineage back to Wm. Robt. Pettway who was born somewhere in Virginia in 1817, but it is muddled beyond that. I think that the records of Brunswick County, VA is the most likely place for me to search for the parents of Wm. Robt. Pettway, who was my great great grandfather. There are over 200 years between the first Pettway (Robert) b 1610 England, who migrated to Surry County, VA, and my ancestor Wm. Robt. b 1817. Robert did not migrate alone from England; he brought over his wife "Mary", his son "Edward", and his daughter "Mary". Robert received a land grant of 50 acres for himself and each of his family members (200 acres total) on the Charles River in 1638, "for his personal adventure". In 1638 Robert was 28 years old, so it is very likely that he had additional children in America. During the next 200 years, there were a LOT of Edward's, Robert's, John's, William's, Hinchia's, et. et. ......Pettways, recorded in Surry and Sussex county VA records. There is a William Pettaway and a John Pettaway listed in the Brunswick County, VA, poll list of 1748. There is a Hinchia Pettway listed as Brunswick County militia soldier in the rev. war., dated Nov. 24, 1777. There are records of John, William, and Hinchia Pettway in the Brunswick County, Va. deeds book #6, which dates between 1750 & 1777. A blending of the surnames of Pettway, Gee, and Harwell through marriage, occurred in St. Andrews Parrish, Brunswick County, VA, in the mid-1700's. It would appear from the VA records and dates, that there was a general south-westward migration through the Virginia colony during those early years, towards North Carolina. The Virginia counties which yield the most Pettway records are: Surry; Sussex; and Brunswick. Early Dinwiddie county records were destroyed. In the late 1700's the migration continued into the northern North Carolina counties of Warren, Onslow, Halifax, Edgecombe. There was a Hinchey Pettway that migrated to Tennessee; a Mark Harwell Pettway(b 1790, d 1861) who migrated from NC to Gees Bend, AL (1845); and my ancestor, Wm. Robt. Pettway (b 1817 VA, d 1881 FL) who migrated from VA to Wilcox County, FL around 1840/50. I believe that a study of the old records of Brunswick County, VA would yield much genealogical data on the Pettway's of the mid to late 1700's. Bob Pettway Chattanooga, TN
