Dear Fellow Pew Researchers,
I would appreciate comments, criticisms, et al, on the following thoughts relative to the ancestry of John Pew of Monmouth Co. NJ who married Susanna Whitlock ca 1700 and died ca 1753/7.
Very simply, I believe John Pew of Monmouth Co. may have been the son, or possibly the nephew, of John Pew of Staten Island NY, who was about a generation older. Here are the "facts" upon which I am basing this conjecture.
(1) John Pew of Monmouth Co. was named in the will of John Bowne (about 1717, I believe).
(2) John Pew of Staten Island purchased Staten Island property from Obadiah Holmes in 1689, and both Obadiah Holmes and John Bowne were named in the 1679 willof Samuel Holmes.
(3) It appears there is an earlier connection between the Bowne and Whitlock families in Gravesend NY.
(4) Both the Staten Island and Monmouth Co. John Pews were shoemakers.
I realize these associations don't prove anything, but when taken all together, they represent a degree of circumstantial evidence that John Pew of Staten Island was the father, or possibly the uncle, of John Pew of Monmouth Co. I also realize this is at odds with the "conventional wisdom" that John Pew of Monmouth was the son of a Francis Pew. I look forward to your comments and criticisms, and would just as soon be proven wrong as proven right.
