Melvin Alonzo Pfost
Mel was born Oct. 21, 1934 to Cecil and Addie Pfost. He passed away Nov. 12, 2006. Graveside services will be held Nov. 29, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Middleton Cemetery with a Celebration of Life service following at 11 a.m. at the Middleton Baptist Fellowship Hall on Main St. Please come and share your remembrances of Mel with his family. Mel Pfost was an avid outdoorsman, teaching his children to hunt and fish. He also had a lifelong passion for sports. Mel's athletic career began at Middleton High School where he excelled in all team sports. Some of Mel's finest moments included being named to Idaho's Hall of Fame for Baseball and holding a state record for fastest underhand softball pitch. Mel attended Boise Junior College as well as the College of Idaho before joining the Hollywood Stars, a triple A affiliation of the Pittsburgh Pirates. After leaving the Stars, Mel worked as a salesman for Dillon Auto Sales. He then joined Kleffner Sporting Goods selling athletic equipment to all Idaho school and also Oregon schools. In 1970 Mel joined the Boise State Athletic Department. He enjoyed his years at Boise State University working as Athletic Equipment Manager, retiring in 1996. After his retirement Mel enjoyed many fishing trips with his buddy Gary Whitney. Outside of his active work life, he was also a proud father of three daughters and five stepchildren, whom he had a major role in their development into young adults. Overall, he achieved many great accomplishments in his life. Mel is survived by his sister, Lanetta Pfost, daughters Melissa (Bruce) Terry, Janean Wahlstrom, fishing buddy and cousin Gary Whitney, Stepchildren Steven Layne, Mike (Deanne) Pfost, Doug Layne, Kathy (Steve) Newcomer, David (Brenda) Layne; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and five cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents and a daughter Cindy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to BAA, Melvin Pfost Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund, Boise State University, 1910 University Dr., Boise, ID 83725. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
