Phares of Highampton, Devon

The 1841 census has 10 Phares listed at 3 separate addresses. Susan 35 and John 15 are at Venton Farm. John 40?, Mary 30, Thomas( b.1832), John(b.1835),Ann(b.1837), William(b.1840), are in the Poor House. Finally at Golden Inn are Alice 70 and Mary her grand daughter(b.1830).Is it unreasonable to suppose that Alice could be John's mother and Mary the eldest of the children? Both Alice and John snr were born in Bratton Clovelly.
In the 1851 census Alice's age is given as 83 and she is living with Alice Parsons, her daughter?
John and Mary have had 4 more children Charlotte(b,1843), Susannah(b.1845), Richard(b.1847) and Catherine(b.1849, my great grandmother), a final child Benjamin was born in 1856.
By 1861 Thomas Phare had married Fanny and become a copper miner in Calstock, Cornwall. They have Elizabeth Ann(b. 1857),Fanny(b.1859),William Henry(b.1863),Thomas(b.1865)and Louisa(b.1868). In addition Fanny seems to have had a child Edward( b.1849) from a previous relationship.
I would be most interested to hear from anyone who can shed some light onto the inter-relationships of what seems to be an extended family.
