Hello Pharr Researchers,

I'm writing a book on the pioneers of the phosphate industry in Florida. One of these was Dr. Alexander F. Pharr of Georgia, who formed one of the earliest phosphate companies. I have quite a bit of information on him but would really love to have a photo of him if one exists. Further info would also be useful.

Here's a summary of his genealogical information.

Dr. Alexander F. Pharr was born in October 1830, the eldest son of Alexander Pharr and Permelia A. (Hardin) Pharr, of Newton County, Georgia. Alexander Pharr Sr. was a planter of great wealth and considerable land holdings.

Dr. Pharr doesn't appear in the 1850 census (the first to list all members of a household), but in 1860 was living on his father’s plantation and was listed as a physician.

On October 29, 1861, Alexander F. Pharr married Susan C. Hiley. Their first son, Alexander Frank (called Frank), was born June 19, 1863. Pharr’s second son, Hiley, was born shortly after he returned from duty at Andersonville, but only lived a little more than a month. In 1869, Pharr and his wife had a daughter, Ida, but just two years later lost their son Frank. The following year, the Pharrs had their final child, Homer, of whom nothing more is known, but it is believed he also died young.

Pharr lived in Florida for a while, and then moved back to Decatur, Georgia, where he died Dec. 20, 1900, survived only by his wife.

Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

Karen Stewart
