Phelps History England Beginning Aug 19, 1599
This history was prepared by my Great Aunt Dorothy Phelps-Rector and hand typed to share with family. I am in the process of re-typing it digitally to share with family and those who are part of this geneology. Here is an excerpt from this record at the beginning and again some years later:
Extracted from the Book of the Phelps family of England, which was compiled by Judge Oliver Seymour Phelps of Portland, Oregon and Andrew T. Severn of Lennox, Massachusetts.Published by the Eagle Publishing Company of Pittsfield Massachusetts in 1899.
1st Generation in New England:
Williams Phelps was the son of Williamand Dorothy Phelps and was baptized in Tewkesbury Abbey Church August 19, 1599. He with his wife and six children and brother, George Phelps, George Pehlps was then unmarried, emigrated to New England on the Ship Mary and John, of 400 tons burden, commanded by Captain Squeb, with 140 passengers. This company had been organized int a churchand selected their ministers the day before sailing.
They sailed from Plymouth England March 20, 1630 and landed in Nantucket, now Hull, Masachusetts, on May 30, 1630.The record makes no mntion of the name of Mr. Phelps' wife.
This company settled in Dorchester Massachusetts, the first settlers and founders of that place.Dorchester claims the honor of being the first town in Massachusetts Colony to organize a town government.
.. and a bit more from later in this history:
This excerpt was from the last Wil and Testament of Mr. Wm. Phelps.
If my wife chooses to settle in any place and to leave the house, then my son shall pay yearly to my wife, the sum of ten pounds during her material life, and in casemyself in my like time or my wife after my decease, in her life time while she abides, to inhabit with my son Timothy, she see cause or desire it, I do reserve power both for myself and for her, after my decease to dispose a barrel or two of cider and some apples yearly, without any harm to the premises, and likewise I do reserve like liberty for myself and my wife, to dispose of my wearing apparel, and whom we meet to enjoy them after our decease. Also I do give full power of bequeathing the great brass pan at our decease.

I'll continue re-typing this in digital format and will be happy to share with those who are in our family lineage for your own reseach and records.
