Matthew PHENIX/PHOENIX parents and birthplace

I have been doing a lot of research lately on my Phenix family, trying to get Abraham PHENIX and his wife Mary MONTROSS qualified for Huron Co, OH First Families. I have found a "preponderance of evidence" indicating that this Abraham was the son of James Francis PHENIX and Catherine BOSCH of Ulster and Delaware Co, NY. I have found no primary sources though. Delaware Co was formed from Ulster, the family was in Middletown in 1790, 1800, & 1810 census, but in different counties.

I have also found a record on IGI for the marriage of Matthew PHENIX and Maria JONS, 29 August 1745 in Philadelphia. With this marriage record is listed son James Francis PHENIX, which is the James who married Catharina BOSCH, above. I cannot find who entered this information on IGI. If you did or somebody knows who please contact me. I would like to find how to get a record of that marriage. Seems like if there was an exact date and place, someone found a record rather than just estimating from a child's birth or guessing where.

Now I am looking for the parents of both Matthew and Maria and where they were from and when they were born. In checking the baptismal records of Ulster County Reformed Dutch churches, there is no record for Matthew's birth. There is also no record of any male PHENIX who would have been his father. There was a James who would have been the right age and there are records in the church there, but he had only daughters surviving according to his will abstract, no males to pass down the PHENIX name.

My thought is that Matthew was related to the PHENIX family in Ulster, but was born somewhere else, possibly PA. Then sometime after his marriage went to Ulster where he has 4 children in the records, the first in 1753. If this is really his marriage on IGI he most likely had children before those recorded in Ulster, which would include James who, according to census was born before 1755, yet still had 3 sons in the 16-15 age in 1810. Would be great if we had census back farther to see what size Matthew's family was.

I have found PHENIX families in records in VA, PA, and also the Alexander PHENIX family in New England. It seems with such an unusual name that our PHENIX should be related to at least one of these other families. But how?

Has anyone connected this Matthew, who would have been born probably in the 1720's, with his parents?

I would like to communicate with anyone who is also working on finding Matthew's parents, finding actual records, and finding how we relate to the other PHENIX families.

Contact me either through the forum or my email address.

Claire
