WALDOBORO (Jan 31): Philip George Fernald, 80, died Jan. 28, 2008, at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro.
He was born April 10, 1927, in Rockland and was a son of Clifford and Amber Fernald.
Mr. Fernald attended schools in Rockland and graduated from the New England Institute of Applied Arts and Science in Boston. During World War II he served honorably with the U.S. Navy.
In 1946 he married Barbara Johnson and together they had four daughters: Sharon, Andrea, Tammy and Heidi.
Mr. Fernald began his career in funeral service at the former Davis Funeral Home in Thomaston and was eventually with the Simmons Funeral Home in Warren. After retiring as a funeral director he was employed with local Exxon and Irving stations in Waldoboro and with Hannaford in Damariscotta and Waldoboro, where he was known as the "lollipop man." Every child he met lovingly received a lollipop from his pocket. Mr. Fernald was a member of St. George Masonic Lodge No. 16 AF&AM in Warren and Warren Lodge of Odd Fellows IOOF #127 in Warren. He enjoyed family, friends, music, dancing and playing cards. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
In 1985 he married Barbara Perry Bowman.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his first wife; two daughters, Sharon and Heidi;
five brothers, Lloyd, Everett, Arnold, Charles and Wyvern; and two sisters, Marion and Esther.
Mr. Fernald is survived by his wife of more than 22 years, Barbara of Waldoboro; two daughters, Tammy of Holiday, Fla., and Andrea of Portland; a grandson, Corey Sukeforth and his wife, Jenn; three great-grandchildren, Sharon, Dynius and Trent all of Rio Grande, N.J.; two stepsons, Skip Bowman and his wife, Bunny, of Waldoboro, and Ernest Bowman and his wife, Jamie, of Warren; a stepdaughter, Connie Rickman and her husband, Mike, of Vandalia, Ill.; 17 stepgrandchildren; and 19 step-great-grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Mr. Fernald's life will be held at a later date at the convenience of family.
Arrangements are with the Coast of Maine Cremation and Funeral Service in Waldoboro
