John Tippet sent me the following info from the 1850 census index from Clermont Co. OH. He didn't have access to the actual census.

1850 CARTER, LEWIS Clermont Co. OH 108 Stonelick TWP Federal Population Schedule OHS6a498741 and OHS9a1232112.

In the 1860 Madison Co. Jackson Twp. IN. he is listed as CARTER, LEWIS 43 yo b. VA P395, Line 26, Family 1220. List wife Etheran (close enough) age 43 yo b. NJ. Children Cerelda, Jackson, William, Leander, Albert, John, Peter and Elizabeth, This I got from James Lee Woolley.

This Lewis Carter/McCarty is my very large brick wall. I find Leander buried under the name Carty in the Perkinsville IN Cemetery, as is Lewis and Effa A. McCarty. No wonder I am confused. LOL
