Dear Mr. Pollard, My great-grandmother(maternal) was Katherine Eve, daughter of Frederic Philipi (or Philippe or Phillipy, or Phillippi, etc.). Your timing is just right. Last week, I went to my local gen. library and looked through the 1850 census in Erie Co., NY. I found an entry for the "Frederic Philipi family. It is located in the 1850 census- Black Rock, Erie Co., NY state, page 263, line 12-18. I was thrilled with this discovery because the entry lists who I think is our great-great-great grandfather, namely Adam Philipi, aged 80. It also lists Frederic's wife Christine (aka Christina Robb) age 28, and their children at that time, George, 8, Frederic, 6, Adam, 4, and Charles, 2. The entry states that all of the children were born in NY. I had been told that the first three were born in Germany as their parents were. I had also been told that this family had moved to Eden in 1850 so possibly later that year they moved. I also found an entry for George Phillipy, who was very likely Frederic's brother. His family lived in Eden (1850census, Erie Co., NY, Eden, page 369, line 25). Frederic and Christine had fourteen children. Your great-grandfather, Henry, was the fifth son born 20 Sep. 1851, married to Charlotte Becker in 1873, and died in Aug., 1921. One of my mom's cousins was really into geneology so I have quite a bit of info starting with Frederick. Was your grandmother Laura or Charlotte? I'd like to share an interesting story that my mom always told me. The third son, Adam, served in the Civil War and was killed by friendly fire, not responding with the password quickly enough. He died at the time their twelvth child was born so they named him Adam also. My mother was raised by her maternal grandmother, Katherine Eve Philippi Tallman, because her mother, Florence, died of TB when my mom was about seven. When my mom was about 16, her grandmom was hit by a car and died. I have a few more stories as told to my mom by her grandmother and her cousin, Jo (the geneologist): Frederick had a wooden leg and his children would always be on their best behavior when they heard him coming. He had a farm in either Black Rock or Eden where the Wick Wire Steel plant was or is located. He raised mules for the Erie Canal. He drove the canal until a mule pulled him into the canal and he had to have his leg amputated. His family left the area (Black Rock or Eden?) because they felt that the taxes were too high. He died in 1885 and left in cash to his widow $66, and $12.08 to each one of his children. In a letter to my mom, Jo mentions Orpha Andrews who was a granddaughter of Henry Phillippi. Ring a bell? Another note - there are so many spellings of Phillippi (the spelling used by Jo) that when you do any research use them all. In the 1850 census two spellings are used, Frederic(k) Philipi and George Phillipy. I feel pretty certain that these two are brothers which is a start on contructing the elder Adam's family. I have always been told that the Phillippi's were from Alsace Lorraine, Germany so I will be researching the immigration records which, I hope, will lead me to more generations of our family. I hope that you have enjoyed this info. I know that the Phillippi Family has had reunions in the past. My mom went to one in, I think, Buffalo about 15-20 years ago. Her guardian, Clinton Phillippi, was still alive at the time. Please e-mail me with any info that you might have, glolittlewood@yahoo.com. I'd be glad to relay any other info I might have or find. I have photos of David Phillippi and his pretty wife. I think my sister has other photos as well. Good luck in your research! Gloria
