Hi, Sheila,
You are not bothering me at all.I like helping people understand DNA testing and genealogy.I recommend that your brother take the Y-DNA test first. That test will tell you which Phillips family group you belong to and whether or not your direct Phillips line is Native American. If the Y-DNA test indicates your direct Phillips line is not Native American, then I recommend that either you or your brother take an autosomal DNA test, which is called the Family Finder test at Family Tree DNA.
The Y-DNA test only looks at about 1% of your brother's DNA (his direct Phillips line). The autosomal test looks at the remaining 99% and it can tell you whether you have any Native American DNA at all.The only problem is it cannot tell you which of your family lines was Native American - only that one or more of them was. Also, a person's autosomal DNA dilutes very rapidly with each generation, so if your Native American ancestor existed more than 5 generations ago, the autosomal test may not be able to detect it.
Hope this makes sense.Don't hesitate to ask questions if it doesn't.There is also more information about the various kinds of DNA and tests on our website under the FAQ section.
Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser
