Death certificates can sometimes be misleading. My great-grandmother's maiden name was McGlothlin. Her death certificate listed her father as unknown and her mother's maiden as McGlothlin with no first name. This led me down a very false trail for a long time. However, I finally discovered that she was the daughter of Joshua McGlothlin and Manerva Wood. Both her parents died when she was young and she grew up in the homes of relatives. Her husband had never met her parents, and when she died many years later, he must have just put down what he could remember his wife saying. And remember that this is a very emotional time.
(BTW,on of my ggg grandmothers was Julia A. Philpot--but a different Julia A. Philpot)
