Julia A Philpot

I'm still trying to rationalize the birth of Julia A Philpot, born 1858 in Clay County Kentucky. She is noted on her death certificate to be the daughter of Grandville Philpot and Sally Doan, but there is too much conflicting information that makes me wonder if this death certificate is accurate.

There is little doubt that the Julia A Philpot, born to Grandville Philpot and Sarah Doan was born 1852. This is conclusive with the birth record of that date. This is also consistent with the 1860 census of Grandville Philpot and family that shows Julia as 8 years of age, besides as I understand Sarah Doan died prior to 1858.

1880 Census for Clay County has Julia Philpot, age 21 with her two daughters Sarah and Susan Philpot. She is noted as being widowed in this census. However her first husband Elias Ashworth (married 1873) is in the 1910 census for Floyd County, Indiana, and he died 1916 in the same county. If her two children were the offspring of Elias Ashworth, then why were they named Philpot in the 1880 census, and why does her daughter’s marriage certificate indicate she was a Philpot?

There is also a Stephen Bolin, age 21 that is living on the same property as Julia in the 1880 census, although he is head of his own household. If anyone has a Stephen Bolin in there database I would like to hear from you. I would also like to compare notes with anyone that is researching this line.

Thanks; Jim Cary
