My GGG Grandmother was Margaret Phimister (or Phemister - I've seen it spelled both ways), b. 30 Oct. 1785 in Brampton, Cumberland, was married to Alexander Petrie of Duffus, Moray, Scotland, and (it is believed) died in Duffus, Moray, Scotland.
My GGGG Grandfather was Alexander Phimister, b. approx 1732, married to Isabella Steel.
I am still in the process of trying to prove all this, though, and have encountered at least one other Alexander Petrie/Margaret Phimister combination thus far. Sigh.
Scots apparent naming conventions created multiples of the same name sets, which becomes extremely confusing from this distance in time. I have obtained a lot fo information from the Petrie mailing list, including some of the stuff on the Phimister-Petrie connection.
As far as I can tell, there were two sets of Phimisters married into the Petrie line, one of which (my line) was from England, and the other from Scotland. Who knows how far back the Scots side goes?
