Jim,
You will find in many old records misspelling of names. Many people back then could not read or write and some could not spell their own name, so when a census taker asked for their name and the person could not spell his own name, then the census taker would write it down the way it sounded to him. Many immigrants arriving in this country could not read or write and the person taking the information would write it down the way it sounded and with the foreign accents, many names were misspelled. Sometimes a person would change the spelling of his name to "americanize" their name. Some even changed the spelling to distingush their family from other families with the same name living in their community.
